Web-Based Software

A search engine is a web-based software tool that enables the user to locate sites and pages on the web based on the information they contain. Hierarchical SearchEngines organize known sites in "trees" that the user browses in order to find a site that deals with a particular topic. Yahoo ( http://yahoo.com ) is an example of hierarchical SearchEngine. Free-form SearchEngines typically present a form in which the user types words that specify the information sought. The search engine returns a hot list of pages containing those words. AltaVista ( http://altavista.digital.com ) and Excite! ( http://www.excite.com ) are examples of free-form search engines.
