| Macintosh, Windows, and UNIX Browsers |
| The first WWW browser that was available for the Macintosh, Windows, and UNIX all with the same interface. Mosaic really started the popularity of the Web. The source-code to Mosaic was licensed by several companies and used to create many other web browsers. Mosaic was developed at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA), at the Univeristy of Urbana-Champange in Illinois, USA. The first version was released in late 1993. MOSAIC Browser is over 20 years old! On april 22, 1993 a group of students and employees of the University of Illinois released the first version of the Internet Browser NCSA Mosaic. It was not the first browser ever, but it was the browsers that made surfing popular. Within a year after the release over 2 million people used NCSA Mosaic. Student Marc Andreessen and employee Jon Mittelhauser were the main forces behind this browser. Andreessen and Jim Clark used the code to develop a new browser, Netscape, a product of the newly formed Netscape Communications. This was near the end of 1994. As we all know, it was not until 1995 that Microsoft released their Internet Browsers and by making it a part of their Windows Operating system became the dominant player in the land of the browsers. A place it has held ever since, although there are an incredible number of browsers to choose from these days. |
