| Frequency Modulation |

FM FM is a primitive method of generating sounds by modulating one or more sound waves by other sound waves. Complex timbres can thus be formed, but usually with fuzzy, tinny unrealistic results. FM synthesis was developed at Stanford University and exclusively licensed to Yamaha. Yamaha FM chips are used in AD Lib and Sound Blaster compatible boards including the Pro Audio Spectrum and Thunderboard. Two main types of FM chips are used today - A mono 11 voice 2 operator, called 3812 (or OPL2); and a stereo 20 voice 4 operator OPL3 allows for more control over the shaping of sounds. |
