| LISTSERV Mailing List Server |
|
A popular automatic MailingList server. People sharing an interest may subscribe to a given discussion, and other subscribers' contributions to the thread are distributed to the entire subscriber base via e-mail. The result is similar to a newsgroup or forum, except that the messages are transmitted as e-mail and are therefore available only to individuals on the list. Although LISTSERV refers to a specific MailingListt server marketed by L-Soft International, the term is sometimes used incorrectly to refer to any mailing list server. Another popular MailingList server is Majordomo. You can access up-to-date MailingList information for the entire Internet from List. They compile all mailing lists into a single directory, and offer a convenient search mechanism so it's easy to find the mailing lists that interest you. LISTSERV is a very widely used commercial computer software (by L-Soft International) that distributes an e-mail message from one member of a LISTSERV list to all (or any particular one) of the other members of that particular LISTSERV e-mail list. This process is similar to that of chat rooms, but it does not require members to be on-line at the same time. Transmission is supposed to take from one to ten minutes. All you have to do is use your e-mail as you normally do. There are thousands of LISTSERVs around the world each serving some particular special interest group. The actual LISTSERV software for a given list resides on a single computer; in this case it is on the ACCD mainframe. (You do not need any LISTSERV software on your computer). There is a different LISTSERV membership list for each course, but students in all sections of each course can be members of a single list. |
