What is VisiCalc?

The first spreadsheet program, VisiCalc was developed in 1979 by Daniel Bricklin, along with Robert Frankston and Dan Fylstra. Although it is no longer produced, VisiCalc and the Apple computer virtually created the market for personal computers. The basis of the VisiCalc design was a grid pattern of cells which contained either numbers or formulas. The design was modeled after an accountant's ledger. Much of the terminology used in spreadsheets is easily traced back to this original model. |
