Follow these instructions if you need File and Print Sharing enabled. These changes should be made for every computer where File and Print Sharing is active. NOTE: These instructions may require you to use your Windows Operating System software (Windows CD), if you do not have this software, do not proceed.
Windows 95/98/ME
- On the desktop, double-click on My Computer.
- Double-click on Control Panel.
- Double-click on Network.
- The Configuration tab should already be selected. If it isn't, click itto select.
- Clicking the Add button.
- Select Protocol, then click Add.
- Select Microsoft in the right pane, then select NetBEUI in the left pane. Click OK. (This installs a local protocol to be used by file and print sharing. You can also use IPX/SPX as your local protocol if you choose. The cable modem will only pass TCP/IP traffic.).
- Select the TCP/IP protocol that is bound to your Ethernet card, and click the button Properties.
- Select the Bindings tab.
- Make sure that there is no check next to File and printer sharing for Microsoft Networks. If there is one, click on the check to uncheck the box.
- Click the button OK.
- Click the next button OK.
- You'll be prompted to restart your computer to make the changes take effect. Click the YES button to restart.
Password protecting shares:
- Go to your desktop and double-click on My Computer.
- Right clicking the mouse on each drive or file you want to share (for example, "C:").
- Drag down and select Sharing from the menu options.
- Clicking the radio button before Shared As so that it's filled.
- Under "Access Type", click the radio button before Depends on Password so that it's filled.
- In the text field after Read-Only and Full Access Password, fill in a password of your choice. We suggest you use a minimum of eight characters and use a mix of upper and lower case letters and numbers to make it harder for unauthorized users to guess what your password is.
- Clicking the OK button at the bottom.
- Clicking the next OK button.
- You'll be prompted to restart your computer to make the changes take effect. Click the YES button to restart.
Windows NT/2000/XP
Please consult your Microsoft documentation or contact Microsoft for details. Alternatively, you may consider other solutions such as a hardware firewall or software firewall to limit access to your shares.
Password protecting shares:
You will want to assign only specific users or groups permission to access those shares, and remove the Everybody and/or Users groups, as well as the Guest user account from accessing the shared folders. Please consult your Microsoft documentation or contact Microsoft for details.
