Enable Secure File and Print Sharing

 Enable Secure File Print Sharing Protecting Protocol Windows

    Follow these instructions if you need File and Print Sharing enabled. These changes should be made for every computer where File and Print Sharing is active. NOTE: These instructions may require you to use your Windows Operating System software (Windows CD), if you do not have this software, do not proceed.
Windows 95/98/ME

  1. On the desktop, double-click on My Computer.
  2. Double-click on Control Panel.
  3. Double-click on Network.
  4. The Configuration tab should already be selected. If it isn't, click itto select.
  5. Clicking the Add button.
  6. Select Protocol, then click Add.
  7. Select Microsoft in the right pane, then select NetBEUI in the left pane. Click OK. (This installs a local protocol to be used by file and print sharing. You can also use IPX/SPX as your local protocol if you choose. The cable modem will only pass TCP/IP traffic.).
  8. Select the TCP/IP protocol that is bound to your Ethernet card, and click the button Properties.
  9. Select the Bindings tab.
  10. Make sure that there is no check next to File and printer sharing for Microsoft Networks. If there is one, click on the check to uncheck the box.
  11. Click the button OK.
  12. Click the next button OK.
  13. You'll be prompted to restart your computer to make the changes take effect. Click the YES button to restart.
Password protecting shares:

  1. Go to your desktop and double-click on My Computer.
  2. Right clicking the mouse on each drive or file you want to share (for example, "C:").
  3. Drag down and select Sharing from the menu options.
  4. Clicking the radio button before Shared As so that it's filled.
  5. Under "Access Type", click the radio button before Depends on Password so that it's filled.
  6. In the text field after Read-Only and Full Access Password, fill in a password of your choice. We suggest you use a minimum of eight characters and use a mix of upper and lower case letters and numbers to make it harder for unauthorized users to guess what your password is.
  7. Clicking the OK button at the bottom.
  8. Clicking the next OK button.
  9. You'll be prompted to restart your computer to make the changes take effect. Click the YES button to restart.
Windows NT/2000/XP

    Please consult your Microsoft documentation or contact Microsoft for details. Alternatively, you may consider other solutions such as a hardware firewall or software firewall to limit access to your shares.

Password protecting shares:

    You will want to assign only specific users or groups permission to access those shares, and remove the Everybody and/or Users groups, as well as the Guest user account from accessing the shared folders. Please consult your Microsoft documentation or contact Microsoft for details.
