| 12 Function Keys |
|
The FunctionKeys are 12 keys at the top of the keyboard labeled F1 through F12. These keys are used to give specific instructions to the computer without the need to type the instructions. For example, in Microsoft Works pressing F1 opens the Works Help menu. The function of the keys may be different for each software application. Any of the 10 or more keys labeled F1, F2, F3, and so on that are placed along the left side or across the top of the keyboard and are used for special tasks by different programs. A FunctionKey is in essence a "programmable" key whose meaning is defined by a program or, in some instances, by the user. A FunctionKey is used by an application program or an operating system to provide either a shortcut for a series of common instructions or a function that is not otherwise available. A common example is the use of the F2 key to envoke the BIOS setup routine on many models of computers. |
